Daniel Island is a planned community with over 10,000 residents; it’s also a can’t miss destination for nature enthusiasts visiting the Lowcountry. The island, with 23 miles of shoreline, is surrounded by rivers, creeks, and marshes and has over 25 miles of walking and biking trails that parallel the Wando River while weaving in and out of marshes, parks, and neighborhoods.
Where the Trail Meets the Water
Begin the journey at 1 River Landing Drive. Should you need to stock up on drinks or snacks, a small market and eatery known as “The Dime” is conveniently located near the parking lot. Trails are available to the left and right along the water from this location. Selecting the trail to the left will lead explorers over boardwalks and dirt trails to encounter the Wando River, miles of marshland, a maritime forest, and ancient oak trees. Blue herons, egrets, and other shore birds are plentiful.
Life on the Water, Made Easy
The Daniel Island Yacht Club and Marina, in the center of the park, offers a variety of nautical experiences such as a junior sailing program, boat rentals, and fishing charters. Tip from a local: Hop aboard the Daniel Island Ferry for the most scenic, round trip route downtown, without the traffic and parking fees. The service offers stress-free transportation between Daniel Island and Charleston. The ferry can also be booked for Dolphin Cruises, Harbor Cruises, or simply as a unique and unforgettable way to chase the perfect sunset.
