Where Waterways and History Converge
Breezes, Views, and Everyday Adventures
Even on the warmest of days, the bridge is a great place to go to catch a refreshing coastal breeze. At the base, a kayak launch has been recently installed to send a vessel into the winding creeks with ease. And at the end of the pier, fisherman have been known to catch crabs, flounder, bass, and trout. In between, it’s a perfect place to stroll or stop for a picnic. Leashed pets are welcome too. The views are spectacular at every angle—the Sullivan’s Island lighthouse is visible on one side, the Ravenel Bridge and City of Charleston on the other, narrow channels part the marsh grasses, while Palmetto trees line the walkway.
Wildlife, Conservation, and Sunset Views
Bird watchers can take in the Seabird Sanctuary and Heritage Preserve and will appreciate opportunities to spot ducks and shore birds. Budding environmentalists will want to check out the oyster reefs during low tide and learn more about the Department of Natural Resources’ commitment to conservation. For photography enthusiasts, time your visit just before sunset to capture dramatic hues painted against downtown Charleston’s skyline. The path can be a bit bumpy in spots, so pack your good walking shoes!
